This is it, everyone-the moment we have all been waiting for. The momentous, and yet beautifully subtle, shift of seasons. When the morning air begins to crisp and the sweaters in your closet begin to tempt more and more. When leaves brown and pumpkins appear outside the grocery store. You know, people-the glorious season of autumn is here. October is one of the very best months of the year. It is full of delicious recipes, fun fall activities, and beautiful outdoor scenery (unless you live in Arizona like I used to…then it just looks the same). I could go on and on about the energy and beauty of October, but I’m going to let this month’s Final Weekend do the talking! The last weekend of October is a wonderful testament to not only what fall has to offer us, but what Lawrence does as well.
You are going to need to get your agenda out for this evening! There is something for everyone on this night and you won’t want to miss a single thing. First up, our Final Friday’s fare. Take a tour of Lawrence’s vibrant downtown scene-Massachusetts Street is a hub of activity. Whether you are looking for local restaurants, unique shops and boutiques, or art in many forms, Mass St. is the place to find all this and more (you never know when a street performer will knock your socks off). This Final Friday, Signs of Life is hosting Artists With Insight Silent Art Auction benefiting the Women’s Insight Center. There will be live music, hors d’oeuvres, and of course, art for sale in the silent auction. Owning a piece of art that you love is a real treat, but knowing that 100% of the proceeds went to a wonderful cause makes it even more special.
If you’re looking to get into the spooky spirit of things, take the kids to Magic with Korso at Theatre Lawrence. Illusionist Korso and his special guests will be performing a show of magic and surprise, and you can even create your own magic potion in the lobby before hand. The show begins at 7:30, but if you don’t want to miss trying your hand at some magic, plan on getting there an hour before! Tickets are only $5.00.
There’s another performance you won’t want to miss- KU’s Student Activities is bringing Phoebe Robinson to the Lied Center. Robinson is an actress, writer and comedian known for her podcast “2 Dope Queens” and her role in Netflix’s “Ibiza.” You know this woman has some good things to say! You don’t want to pass up the chance to see her live.
If you’re up for it, end the evening at Replay Lounge to celebrate their 25th Anniversary. There is always a wacky lineup of local artists at Replay, so you know their anniversary weekend is sure to wow.
Here we go- a Saturday dedicated to fall fun! If you brought your pooch with you for the weekend, start the day off by letting them bask in the limelight. Lucky Dog Outfitters is having a costume contest Saturday morning at 10:00am. The costume theme is celebrity-human or animal. If you’ve got some tiny wigs or a big imagination, join in on the fun and see if your pup and their costume can stand above the rest! I kind of want to go and I don’t even have a dog to dress up. Can you imagine how adorable this will be?
One of my favorite fall activities is the tried and true pumpkin patch. Shaake’s Pumpkin Patch gives me all the fall feels I could want-a giant hay maze, freshly made kettle corn, and of course, rows and rows of pumpkins just waiting to be picked. I would recommend getting there early or perhaps a bit later in the day to avoid when the patch is the busiest. But don’t worry, there are animals to see and a little shop area to peruse as well, so if you have to wait for the next hayride out to the patch, you certainly won’t be bored.
Time for a pre-Halloween treat! You can trick or treat around Mary’s Lake at the Prairie Park Nature Center Sunday from 1:00-4:00pm. There will be cider and cookies, and I bet you may even get to see an interesting animal or two. The family will be totally prepped for Halloween! Although if you have a long ride home, you may want to save some of the candy for later…
Check out all the events at this month’s Final Fridays.
