The Lawrence Busker Festival will be taking over the streets of Downtown Lawrence for its 12th year over Memorial Day weekend. Those who have been to the festival are familiar with the amazing feats of danger, flexibility, strength, magic, and comic relief that the festival provides. But there’s something new this year… something not only Lawrence has never seen, but that the world has never seen. This year’s Lawrence Busker Festival is the very first festival of its kind (IN THE WORLD) that will feature all female performers!
But why? It’s something Lawrence Busker Festival founder and operator Richard Renner has been thinking about for some time now. Since starting the Festival, Richard has heard that all buskers have not been treated equally. Specifically, female buskers don’t get equal pay as their male counterparts, and those female buskers were being looked at as a “token” to festival organizers.
Token? Yep! It’s certainly not unheard of for female buskers to approach a festival organizer with their act and be told that they already have a female act booked. It’s happened to most, if not all, of the buskers that will be performing at the Lawrence Busker Festival this year.
When Richard was first exploring the idea of an all-female festival he asked his good friend, Linsey Lindberg (aka Mama Lou Strong Woman) if there were enough world-class female acts to field the entire entertainment of the festival. Her answer, “Hell yeah!” And so the process of planning the first all-female busker festival began. Not just to highlight female acts, but to prove that a top-notch festival can be done with all female entertainment.
Female performers from all over the world will be making their way to Lawrence in the coming weeks and days to make history. Take a look at who they are, and plan to see them in person, May 24-26.
Mama Lou, American Strong Woman. She’s back for her 11th year with her amazing feats of strength including making applesauce with her biceps.
Molly Keczan, The Farmers Daughter. She’s bringing agricultural jokes and down-home humor with Lariat tricks, milk bottle balancing and much more all the way from Newfoundland.
Bekah Smith, Juggling, Unicycling, Comedy. She never misses a chance to come back to her home state… and we’re thrilled to be dazzled by her craft.
Sharon Mahoney, Canadian Comedian. Polite, patriotic, politically correct, and passive-aggressive transforms into an ultra-progressive alter ego with a little “help” from the audience.
Cate Great, Acrobatic Juggler. She’s charming, she’s talented, and she defies gravity balancing on one hand! 😲
Sara Twister, Acrobatic Contortion + Archery. She can fire a bow… with her feet… whilst balancing on her arms!
Sarah Kunz, The Flyin Hawaiian. You’ve never seen a hula-hoop show like this one! Imagine a three-ring circus and a Hawaiian vacation had a baby. 🎪
Martika Daniels, Sideshow Stuntwoman. Returning to her hometown to play with sharp objects in dangerous and amazing ways.
Just Felice, Street Magician. You’ll be astonished by her tricks. Watch the impossible happen right before your eyes.
Voler Thieves of Flight, Aerial Artists. Breathtaking and beautiful, watch this group soar through the air with their artful show.
Don’t miss these amazing street performers at the Lawrence Busker Festival, May 24-26 in Downtown Lawrence. 😝👏💗
