It’s the most dazzling time of the year! That faint moment between all the twinkling magnificence of the holidays and the excitement of a new year collide on Tuesday. Whether you’re feeling fabulous and grand, or wanting to keep it low-key, there’s a New Year’s Eve celebration for you in Lawrence. Here are some of the events helping Lawrencians usher in 2020.
The Bottleneck, 8:00 PM
The last time Hembree played the Bottleneck, it sold out well ahead of the show. You’ll want to have tickets in hand before heading out on this night. The rising stars, featuring an ensemble of indie musicians from the Lawrence and Kansas City area, have had a whirlwind of a year. Hembree has toured the world, snagged numerous media appearances, and won the hearts of many with their danceable indie-synth sounds.
They’ll be joined by Kansas City’s Mess, who are sure to deliver a set that’s heavy on the guitars and emotions.
The Replay, 10:00 PM
You can never accuse the Replay of throwing a boring show on New Year’s Eve. Once again, they’re delivering with a stacked set. Hardcore rockers Bummer will be joined by soothing yacht rockers Thighmaster. Also on the bill, Kansas City indie rockers Momma’s Boy, as well as a special performance by Heidi Lynne Gluck and Jeff Stolz.
If you’re feeling more dance, DJ Approach will be keeping the party going on the heated patio. The Replay tends to decorate nicely for New Year’s Eve, so don’t be afraid to glam it up.
The Granada, 8:00 PM
For those looking to jam, consider heading to the Granada. Lucas Parker and his band will be headlining the night. If you’ve never seen him play, you’re in for a treat. Parker is an absolute madman on the guitar, constantly translating jazz riffs with furiously fast fingers on the fret. Even if jam bands aren’t your cup of tea, what Parker accomplishes onstage is fairly impressive.
He’ll be joined by the ever-funky Cory Phillips (watch out for that surly voice of his!) and 3 Son Green.
Lucia, 6:00 PM
Lucia is throwing two shows on New Year’s Eve. For the early birds, Coversmith is rocking the evening away from 6:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. You’re sure to hear something you know, thanks to their popular covers. Get ready, they tend to play high-energy rock and roll. After the show, the 2020 Turntable Vision NYE Party kicks off with DJ Johnny Quest and DJ Proof.
The Jazzhaus, 6:00 PM and 10:00 PM
The Jazzhaus is also one of those venues throwing two events for New Year’s Eve. If you head there early, you’ll be able to catch the Crumpletons, playing from 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The Lawrence rockers play for older crowds, specializing in music of the 60’s, so you can appreciate the music of yesteryear while looking forward to a new one.
Later on, Big Rick & The Soul’d Out take the stage. The Jazzhaus’ dance floor is the perfect setting for this band, as you’re likely to hear R&B, soul, and funk.
Gaslight Gardens, 8:00 PM
If you’re looking for something on the early side and are in the mood for folk, you can warm up at the Gaslight with a set from Nalani Proctor. The one-woman-band will be nestled in with her guitar and foot bass pedals, sharing stories of her past. She may encourage you to sing along when the moment hits and the feeling is right.
Feel like dancing? Here’s where to find the DJs.
The Replay Pation – DJ Approach
Lucia – DJ Johnny Quest and DJ Proof
Eighth Street Taproom – Bando Boys
