Lawrence, KS, October 25, 2016 – The Board of Directors of eXplore Lawrence (EL), the Destination Marketing Organization for the City of Lawrence and Douglas County, announced today the spinoff and transfer of its sports development activities to the Lawrence Sports Corporation (LSC), whose mission is to create and support sporting events in Lawrence.
“With this move, EL will be allowed to focus its energies on brand and destination development designed to make Lawrence the “go to” destination in the state of Kansas”, according to EL Executive Director, Michael Davidson.
Longtime employee of EL, Bob Sanner, will lead the LSC and its efforts for the 2017 USA Track & Field Junior Olympics, managing the day-to-day event operations.
“I’m truly grateful for all of the community support during the past 12 years establishing Lawrence as a hub for sporting events,” said Bob Sanner.” The City of Lawrence, KU and Kansas Athletics, Downtown Lawrence and many generous sponsors have enabled us to build excitement for events including the Tour of Lawrence, the Downtown Shot Put, and competitions for young athletes of all ages. I’m excited to continue my work for the Lawrence Sports Corporation, and the 2017 Junior Olympics will begin a new era for sports events in our community. ”
EL will put its efforts behind assuring a world class visitor experience for up to 10,000 competitors and their friends and families who will visit Lawrence and Northeast Kansas during the July 2017 event. These efforts include promoting local accommodation, dining and entertainment options to guests, as well as hosting a visitor experience area at the event.
EL and LSC will jointly sponsor the Junior Olympics “JO” Summit on January 24, 2017 to rally community support and prepare local businesses and organizations for this unique opportunity to showcase all that Lawrence has to offer.
