(LAWRENCE, KS) – The 38th Annual Kansas State Fiddling and Picking Championships will be held on Sunday, August 26, in South Park, Lawrence, Kansas. The Championship event on Sunday hosts two stages with four concerts and eight music competitions: fiddle, youth fiddle, banjo, mandolin, ensemble folk-singing, flatpick guitar, misc. acoustic instruments, and finger-style guitar. All ages and skill levels are encouraged to compete. A special Youth Award is presented each year to an outstanding musician under the age of 16.
Musicians, fans, and families will enjoy the festive atmosphere with concerts by area bands: The Matchsellers, No Mountain String Band, The Quasi Brothers, and No Bow Tie. Vendors will include fine handcrafted instruments, as well as food, drink and artist’s booths. Throughout the park will be jam sessions, longtime family favorite Silly Hats, and shape note singing.
The event concludes a full weekend of traditional music, beginning with performances by six area bands at the Replay Lounge and Lucia in Downtown Lawrence on Friday night. Saturday events including workshops and an evening concert featuring Tony Furtado, artist in residence at the Americana Music Academy,1419 Massachusetts St.
