Lawrence, KS, July 7, 2016– More than 750 professional and amateur cyclists will descend upon Lawrence, July 15-17, for the 8th Annual Tour of Lawrence. This premier, USA Cycling-sanctioned event is on the Pro-Am men and women cyclists’ circuit. Tour of Lawrence is presented by U.S. Bank and made possible by eXplore Lawrence. The event includes street sprints, circuit races and criterium, as well as free kids’ activities and free live music.
The event kicks off Friday at 6:30 PM with the Sunflower Outdoor & Bike Street Sprints on Vermont Street between 7th and 9th Streets. From 6:30 -10:00 PM a free Kids’ Zone, sponsored by Lawrence Central Rotary, will be located on 8th Street between Vermont and Massachusetts Streets. The Kids’ Zone will feature a bounce house, inflatable games, and food and beverage sales. Following the Street Sprints, cyclists and spectators will enjoy a free street party featuring live music from the powerhouse trio from Kansas, Split Lip Rayfield. Often described as a mix of bluegrass and country with an accent of metal, Split Lip Rayfield has carved out their own genre of music with their unique sound and instrumentation.
Saturday’s Meadowbrook Apartments Haskell Campus Races begin at 9:00 AM. The course runs through the historic Haskell Indian Nations University campus and the Breezedale Historic District. “This course is truly challenging with long, fast, wide-open sections as well as urban streets. It takes a racer’s best driving skills to appreciate this 2.2 miles-per-loop course,” said Bob Sanner, eXplore Lawrence.
Sunday is packed full of activities for the entire family. The Free State Brewery Downtown Criterium races begin at 9:00 AM. The course starts and finishes at 9th and Massachusetts Streets. Spectators will have plenty of opportunity to see top names in competitive racing in action as this circuit covers Massachusetts Street from 7th to 10th, 10th Street from Massachusetts to New Hampshire, New Hampshire from 8th to 10th, 8th Street between Vermont and New Hampshire, 7th from Massachusetts to Vermont, and Vermont Street from 7th to 8th.
The free Kids’ Zone will be back Sunday morning from 9:00 AM – noon at 8th Street between Vermont and Massachusetts Streets. A free Kid’s Bike Race, organized by Lawrence Bicycle Club, takes place at 11:00 AM. Kids must register for the race on 9th Street between Vermont and Massachusetts between 9:30 AM and 10:45 AM. All participants must wear a helmet. The first 300 participants will receive a Tour of Lawrence award medal. All participants will receive coupons for a free kid’s meal from ingredient, free frozen yogurt from TCBY, plus a chance to win one of three $300 gift certificates from Sunflower Outdoor & Bike Shop.
